= Crescent City Sound had its recent coaching session with Mary Beth. It was probably the coldest day of the year. Some members arrived late because of broken water pipes and icy roads. They are getting ready for competition in March and know how important this coaching is to prepare. Because of the Christmas holidays, Delgado Community College was closed, so they had to find another place to rehearse. Chalmette High School’s principal, Wayne Warner, came to their rescue and allowed them to use his beautiful school. The original building was built in 1961. In 1971 the original building was enlarged to accommodate an ever-growing population. The biggest change came in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina swept thru St. Bernard parish and devastated Chalmette High School along with every school in the parish. The school saved hundreds of lives during the storm. It opened its doors as a “shelter of the last resort” and housed many families during and days after the storm. Ten weeks after Katrina inundated the area, Chalmette High School opened its doors to schoolchildren from 3 years to 12th grade. The only school in the parish, the classes were held in trailers and tents. Today Chalmette high is a state of the art school second to none! Its Ninth Grade Academy was built in 2009. This school is an architectural and educational marvel! It has its own science labs, cafeteria, gym, fitness center, wrestling arena and indoor Olympic size swimming pool. The Performing Arts Center and library are now under construction. Thank you Mary Beth for your enthusiasm, encouragement and hard work and to Chalmette High School and Mr. Warner for allowing us to use your beautiful school!!!!!
